MAGNIFICENT
JEWELS FROM THE DORIS DUKE COLLECTION
Sold to Benefit the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation
June 2, 2004
Christie’s
evening sale of Magnificent Jewels from the Doris Duke Collection Sold
to Benefit the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation totaled $11,964,176,
doubling the high presale estimate and resulting in the highest sale
total ever for any private jewelry collection sold at auction in America
and the third most successful single-owner sale held worldwide in the
past 10 years. The
top lot of the evening was a Belle Epoque diamond and pearl pendant
necklace by Cartier, which sold for $2,359,500, a world auction record
for a diamond necklace by Cartier. A world auction record of $1,127,500
was also established for an emerald bead necklace, and the rare and
exceptional D-color rectangular-cut diamond ring of 19.72 carats by
Tiffany & Co, fetched $1,261,900. The sale was 100% sold by value
and 100% sold by lot.
“ As
witnessed during recent paintings sales, there seems to be no price
limit for exceptional quality,” said François Curiel,
Chairman of Christie’s Europe, International Head of Christie’s
Jewelry Department and this evening’s auctioneer. “There
is no truer testimony to this than the exceptional price of $2.3 million
obtained tonight for the Belle Epoque diamond necklace by Cartier.
Its design and period and use of extremely old Indian diamonds no longer
available today made it effortlessly eclipse its intrinsic value. The
results of this sale follow very successful spring jewelry auctions
in New York, Hong Kong, and Geneva and prove that the jewelry market
is back in force. Indeed, in just six months, Christie’s has
sold 19 jewels worldwide for more than $1 million, compared to only
11 during 2003.”
The sale
of the Doris Duke Collection is a five-session sale. On June 4 at 6
p.m., Christie’s will also present a gala evening sale of the
Extraordinary Private Cellar of Doris Duke, featuring some of France’s
most exquisite wines.

CHRISTIE’S
EVENING SALE OF POST-WAR AND CONTEMPORARY ART TOTALS $102,111,650
AND SETS NINE NEW WORLD AUCTION RECORDS
The May
11 evening sale at Christie's in New York resulted in the highest-ever
total for a Post-War and Contemporary Art sale, totaling $102,11,650.
Nine world auction records were established, and 25 works sold for more
than $1 million. The top lot of the evening's sale was Jackson Pollock's
Number 12, 1949, which sold for $11,655,500, setting a new world auction
record for the artist.

Christie’s
Great Estates is proud to welcome Las Campanas as a participant in the Preferred
Developer Program.
Las
Campanas lies several miles north of downtown Santa Fe on gently rolling
hills that afford spectacular views of both the Sangre Cristo Mountains to
the east and the Jemez Mountains to the west. Las Campanas is the only property
in Santa Fe that provides the recreational amenities, privacy, and neighborhoods
so often in demand. Two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses, a spectacular
spa, world-class equestrian facilities (including a 35,000-square-foot indoor
riding arena), six tennis courts with championship surfaces, hiking trails,
fabulous restaurants, and a superb clubhouse all contribute to making Las
Campanas
one of America’s most beloved communities.
But
the true point of distinction for Las Campanas is Santa Fe itself. Santa
Fe is rated one of America’s finest cities (by Travel & Leisure,
Modern Maturity, Condé Nast Traveler, and many more), and Las Campanas
is the premiere master-planned community within Santa Fe.

 Mandalay
Ranch, the spectacular mountain ranch owned by entertainment
executive Peter Guber, was recently sold by Christie’s
Great Estates affiliate Joshua & Co. for $46,000,000. Located
between the Buttermilk and Snowmass ski resorts in Aspen, Colorado,
the 650-acre ranch consists of three parcels and features a main
residence and several guest residences and has long been considered
one of the most awe-inspiring properties in the Rockies. The
ranch's new owners, Dawn and Roland Arnall, have a long history
of philanthropy to organizations that support wildlife protection,
education, and civil and human rights, among others; the Arnalls
plan to continue to provide access for migrating elk along wildlife
corridors on the property and continue to allow public access
for cross-country skiing and ski-skating.
Congratulations,
Joshua & Co.!

Christie's
Great Estates affiliate LandVest, Inc., recently announced the
sale of Goose Point in Duxbury, Massachusetts. This record-setting

2010
OLYMPICS TO BE HELD IN VANCOUVER-WHISTLER
In
early July, the International Olympic Committee announced that
the 2010 Olympic Winter Games had been awarded to the Vancouver-Whistler
area. While the approach of the Olympics will affect this beautiful
locale in a myriad of ways, its impact on local real estate will
be one of the most significant. In a market in which there is
very little new inventory being built, the Olympics will undoubtedly
mean an increased demand for property ownership along with a
steady rise in real estate prices over the next few years. The
Christie’s Great Estates affiliates in Whistler—Sea
to Sky Real Estate and Macdonald
Realtors—supported the
2010 bid and look forward to the benefits and challenges that
the 2010 Olympics will bring to area.
