Twin
Ponds is a residence like no other—a stunning modernist
structure impressively composed of glass and concrete sited
over a lovely pond and surrounded by 21.7 acres of incredible
gardens in Westchester County. It is the masterwork of
the late Robin Roberts, founder and owner of Clarence House,
and the result of his close collaboration with architect
Milton Klein, landscape architect Armand Benedek, and interior
designers Jay Spectre and Geoffrey Bradfield.
The
3,600-square-foot main house, abundant with floor-to-ceiling
windows, not only overlooks and accents the pond but also
blends impressively with the gardens in its design. The
house is entered through a glass foyer and an interior
bridge that
leads to a two-story step-down living room with a massive
fireplace. The elegant dining room, with its lacquered
Macassar ebony wood-panelled walls and gold-leaf ceiling,
overlooks
a waterfall. The adjoining fully equipped chef’s kitchen to a two-story glass dining atrium filled with tropical
plants. The library has walls panelled in zebrawood, a fireplace,
a wet bar, and doors accessing the Armand Benedek–designed
patio and pool.
The
entire second floor of the residence is occupied by the
master suite. The rooms of the suite overlook the property
in every direction and are panelled in checkered bird’s-eye
maple. Also here are two identical bathrooms that encompass
a steam room, a whirlpool tub, and a dressing room filled
with built-in closets. The main house also offers a guest
room with a full marble bath, numerous built-in zebrawood
cabinets and closets, and
an adjacent two-car garage with tiled walls. The home’s
full basement offers an outstanding climate-controlled wine
cellar and tasting room.
On
the exceptionally landscaped grounds, gardens evoke the
modern and the traditional—not unlike the beautiful
classic fabrics of Clarence House. Some of the highlights
include a stilt hedge of linden, a Japanese garden, a meditation
garden, a Zen garden, a double allée of 60 Kwanzan
cherry trees, a rose garden, and an English garden.
The
outbuildings at Twin Ponds include a two-bedroom cottage
with a heated garage and a workshop area; an expansive
heated barn; a two-bedroom, four-bathroom cabana with a
gymnasium,
a hot tub, and an “environmental room”; and a
free-standing panelled billiards room or poolhouse equipped
with a full kitchen and a bar. The tennis court is accompanied
by a stone pavilion with another wet bar.
In
the grand country of New York’s Westchester County,
the estate known as Twin Ponds stands as a true architectural
and horticultural landmark. Although the façade of
the home is minimalist, the interior is utterly opulent and
inviting, and the living areas are spacious and classic in
their styling. The grounds combine serene hidden spaces;
ideal transitions from one garden to the next; and a deliberate,
artful repetition. The result is an estate of utter enjoyment.
Offered at $16,000,000.
