Whistler Transportation
Whistler Resort is located 120 kms north of Vancouver.
The provincial government has upgraded segments of Highway 99, known as the
'Sea to Sky Highway' over the course of the two decades the Resort Municipality
has been in existence. The journey can now be accomplished in approximately 2
hours, depending on weather conditions.
The highway traverses the North Shore mountains as it leaves Vancouver and
follows a course along the edge of a fiord known as Howe Sound to Squamish. From
here the highway heads inland into the Whistler Valley via the Cheakamus River
Canyon.
The geography and views along the way are spectacular. The road is very
winding and weather can be very challenging at times.
As long ago as 1914 people have been traveling
to the Whistler Valley to enjoy the pristine
lakes and clean mountain air.
The first guest accommodation was the Rainbow
Lodge, built on the shores of Alta Lake.
Loggers were harvesting the virgin west coast rain forest
in the area at that time as well.
The journey from Vancouver used to take an entire
day. A boat
trip to Squamish at the head of Howe Sound and a train for
the balance of the trip was the only means of getting to Whistler. The entire journey took over 7 hours.
